About Radford University

Radford University is a doctoral-degree granting public university, located in Radford, which is a city in the US state of Virginia, with a population estimated at a number of more than 16 000 inhabitants, during the 2008 census.

Radford University was founded in 1910, by Dr. John Preston McConnell, first starting as State Normal and Industrial School for Women at Radford, adopting its current name in 1979. Today, Radford has a total enrollment of approximately 8800 students, and offers a vast array of educational programs, in numerous fields of study, including educational programs in more than 100 fields, for undergraduates, and graduate programs including the M.F.A., M.B.A. and specialized doctoral programs in health-related professions.

Athletics

Radford's athletic teams are known as the Highlanders, which were named in honor of the region's Scots-Irish heritage, who compete in the Big South Conference, in 19 NCAA varsity sports for both men and women, including in basketball, in which the men's team has won the Big South Conference tournament in 1998 and 2009, as well as in tennis and softball, in which the Highlanders have won the Big South Conference Men's Tennis Championship in 2007, 2008 and 2009, and the Big South Softball Championship in 2009.
